At the beginning of the year, I communicate my rules and expectations clearly and directly. I require students and their parents to sign a contract stating that they have read and understand my behavioral and academic expectations and consequences. These contracts help to create a safe, positive, work-oriented environment where students are comfortable and time is not wasted on unnecessary or preventable events; as a result, there is more time available for quality instruction. I find that creating the rules prior to the school year is the most effective in having a safe classroom. I find it more effective to have the rules already created because there is some authority in the classroom and the students are able to take me seriously. I am always open to suggestions and changes, but I will take them into deep consideration before implementing them.
